I have washed my face with Clinique Liquid Facial Soap for years—and I mean years! It’s ranked 3 (moderate hazard) on the Cosmetics Safety Database and it’s priced at $16.50. I love this cleanser because it foams up just enough to make me feel like it's working, it smells light and clean and it leaves my face acne-free and healthy-looking. Therefore, I was skeptical (even a bit nervous) to test out the four brands below. After all, once a girl’s got a good cleanser that works, she doesn’t want to dabble (it's like finally finding the right man!). But the brand is a ‘non-signer’ of the Cosmetics Safety Database and the product has high concerns for allergies, so I thought it’s high time I test some other, more organic, safe cosmetics.

People may know him from his HBO series Entourage, some may remember him from a little rom com called Drive me Crazy (such as myself), but now Adrian Grenier is making a name for himself as a passionate environmentalist. And well, this could be his most important role yet!

The last eighteen months or so have been an adventure of sorts: I stopped eating animals. I won’t say I stopped eating meat, because depending on whom you ask, this may only include red meat, maybe chicken, and probably not fish. Many people even call themselves vegetarians, but love a good piece or salmon or red snapper. Newsflash: fish have feelings too, and they were definitely once alive. If you eat fish, but not other animals, that makes you a pescatarian.

It’s that time of the year again; it’s hot, humid and hazy – the perfect environment for those pesky little mosquitoes, gnats and ticks! Five minutes outside in this weather and you’re already scratching and rubbing your irritated, red, newfound bumps. But before you pop open that bottle of bug spray in search of relief, you might want to read the label on your favorite bug repellent. What you find is inside might not be so relieving…

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent proposal to ban sugary drinks in certain forms and sizes has created quite a stir across the country. It was formally submitted to NYC’s Board of Health for a review and comment period before it can be made official. Whether or not it succeeds, it has created a lot of debate on all sides of the issue, and generated discussion around other important and related topics such as food choices, obesity and personal freedom.

Let’s begin with a thought experiment (scientists’ double-speak for playing make-believe), that’ll have your anxiety level really set sail. Draw an imaginary line around your home. Are the dog and kids safely inside? Good; from this point on nothing gets in or out. Your power lines are cut off, no deliveries will be accepted, and you are effectively trapped. How will you cook the family dinner, watch your team crush their opponents, or function after sunset? How long will you survive?

Composting is very environmentally friendly and surprisingly ‘easy’. But the foul smell that may originate in the kitchen or even the garden might repel some people or prevent them from trying it.

Welcome to my beauty column! We will devote this space to a different product category for the month, be it body wash, nail polish or bath salts.
