See what our EcoPlum columnists have to say...
As we said goodbye to yet another eventful year, and welcomed 2013, some of us might’ve contemplated beginning a new workout regimen, being more reserved with our spending budget, or perhaps striving to be more environmentally conscious. If the latter is your choice of change for the new year, here are green resolutions that will help you dive into 2013 with more confidence, vigor and commitment.
‘Tis the season to fill our homes with the wonderful smell of freshly baked cookies, decorate inside and out with festive lights, count our blessings...and wander around wondering what to buy our loved ones (that’s the part I enjoy the very least).
It may be cold outside, but things are heating up in New York City. Tonight is the 12/12/12 concert for Sandy relief and it’s being called the biggest music event in history. With performances from Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Kayne West, Eric Clapton, Alicia Keys, The Who and the Rolling Stones, it’s no wonder the concert is sold out. All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, an organization dedicated to helping the victims hit the hardest by Hurricane Sandy.
I have a mantra that decorating your home is like accessorizing yourself. You always need that little something to go with your outfits to make the look complete. The changing of the seasons is the time to switch out your home’s accessories.
For us treehuggers, it would be nice if we could just give the gift of love or a hug and pretend that it will make our families and others happy around Christmas time – the season of gift giving. But while I'm sure they wouldn't mind the gesture, they would probably prefer to also receive a new video game, an iTunes® gift card or a designer bag.
Temperatures have dipped and the heat is on to keep skin soft and supple at a time when it’s prone to drying and cracking. When skin loses moisture, dull cells can build up on the surface—and there goes your glow!
We are all so saddened by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy, as well as all those who lost their homes, belongings, cars, and jobs. I thank each and every one of the heroic first responders who put their lives at risk to save others. Now, a week after the storm, we are all still amazed by the amount of destruction and despair in the most affected areas: the Rockaways, Staten Island, the Jersey Shore, Breezy Point, Coney Island, Downtown Manhattan, and so many other places. I've been trying to do what I can to help, along with my family, and wanted to pull together a list of ways everyone can help. Please add your resources as well, and let's make this a reference for those wanting to lend a hand. Also, please share your inspiring stories and photos with our community. We will get through this and we will rebuild smarter and stronger!
Congratulations! Your baby boy or girl has finally arrived and you’re now ready to dive into motherhood (or fatherhood – hello, dads). Before those sleepless nights become habit and diapers and toys take over the house, take a moment to think about how your baby routine and items have an impact on another mother; Mother Earth.
One day not too long ago, I looked in the mirror and noticed that my tanned, olive-toned skin seemed to turn a yellow/pale overnight. Time to look to natural makeup for the right type of blush! When searching for safe cosmetics, it’s important to learn about the most popular ingredients used within that product category and to find out if any of those ingredients come with warning signs.
