So the Jack-o-lantern is in the compost and the Thanksgiving meal is probably still in your tummy...and before you know it, the holidays are among us. That's right---it's time to start shopping, decorate your home and celebrate the season with family and friends. But before you put up ole' Tannenbaum or take out the Menorah, consider how you can be a little more environmentally responsible this holiday season.

Instead of purchasing standard taper candles for your Menorah, kinara or Christmas decor in general, investigate options for cleaner candles made of beeswax or soy. Conventional candles contain additives that my stain fabric and petroleum-based ingredients that create a dirty burn. Beeswax and/or soy candles burn much cleaner and will still make your "holiday of lights" sparkle and glow. You can also consider creating your own candelabrum if you are in need of one with old plumbing hardware, wine bottles or different-sized candle holders.

When it comes to your Christmas tree, make sure it lives up to its "evergreen" title. There are pro and cons to the obvious two choices of real or fake and it's up to you to decide which way to go with your indoor tree. But what about the not-so-obvious choices? If you have a large indoor plant or cactus, make it the holiday focus and decorate it! Maybe you could harvest some downed branches you found during your fall clean-up to create a homemade display. As far as wrapping gifts go, make an effort to try something greener. I realized only a couple of years ago that customary wrapping paper and tissue paper were not recyclable. If you have a couple of "Secret Santa" situations, request that all presents are greenly adorned. You can use recycled wrapping paper, brown paper grocery bags, newspaper, magazines or furoshiki. These techniques may also inspire your gift recipients to alter their gift wrapping practices. Whether you put up a pine or light seven to eight candles, make a conscious decision this holiday season to not only spread joy, but good practice.
