State Environmental Agencies serve the same role as the Unites States Environmental Protection Agency, but on a local state level. State agencies have environmental regulations, permit requirements, enforcement authority, and environmental oversight regarding reporting requirements and fees.

State Agencies such as the California Air Resource Board (CARB) developed and oversee a tougher more stringent regulatory scheme as compared to other States. CARB has had an influence on the amendments to the Federal Clean Air Act. Many states in the country have adopted “CARB like” regulations.

Often States' environmental regulations may be more stringent than EPA's federal program, by including additional waste constituents and sources. Know your state's environmental laws and regulations. Familiarity of your state’s environmental program keeps you in the know when it comes to environmental issues.
