Electricity is generated from many different ways from the combustion of fossil fuel to nuclear power plants. In fact many electricity customers can choose their provider of electricity and may have the option to purchase green power from their utility provider. In order to find out whether this option exists for your home or business, go to EPA’s website and enter the residential or business zip code. This website also provides a chart that compares the fuel mix used to generate electricity in your region of the power grid to the national fuel mix. A second chart compares the average air emissions rates in your region of the power grid to the national average emissions rates.

Another database to consider is found at EPA’s Clean Energy Program. This database helps energy consumers in all sectors, state policy makers and energy providers improve their knowledge about Clean Energy technology and policy options by providing objective information, creating networks between the public and private sector and providing technical assistance.
