EcoPlum is committed to providing easy access to information and services related to products that we consider to be environmentally sound. In determining what we consider to be environmentally sound, EcoPlum uses information and/or data provided by government entities and the private sector. These entities rely heavily on environmental and energy conservation in their determinations, and usually include the product’s composition, life cycle management and final method of disposal as sources. See below for a list of these entities.
The government source material used in EcoPlum is from Federal and State programs designed to evaluate the environmental and energy efficiency of products. Such programs include EPA/DOE’s Energy Star, EPA’s Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide and USDA's Biopreferred program. The private sector source material includes respected self-certification programs, third-party certification programs, as well as private and non-for-profit initiatives. Although, self-certification programs have little or no active oversight; member submissions are monitored and they can be removed by the entity managing the program if information is found to be false or misleading.
EcoPlum performs an initial review of the product information contained on its website. EcoPlum appreciates feedback from users, and encourages users to rate products on the EcoPlum website. EcoPlum™ also suggest that users review the product’s ratings prior to purchase. EcoPlum reserves the right to discuss any environmental or energy efficiency concerns regarding a product with the vendor and will exercise editorial control when the product’s status of environmentally approved is in jeopardy.
Almost all of the appliance information in this initial version of EcoPlum relied heavily on energy conservation and very little if any on product content. It is EcoPlum™’s vision that an appliance’s life cycle management and its ability to have 100% recyclable end product will be important.
Information on EcoPlum’s website is updated on a regular basis. EcoPlum™ expects that both the government and private sector source materials will change over time to include new or modified programs and/or screening processes having improved environmentally aggressive milestones. EcoPlum will on a regular basis reevaluate all programs and screening processes used and consider new environmental evaluation tools that promote greater environmental expectations. EcoPlum will routinely update the website to adjust for these types of evaluations. EcoPlum's commitment also extents to the freshness and usefulness of the data.
